Enlightened

An urban-fantasy filled with magic, mutants, and mad men

The world has fallen into a time of great chaos and societal unrest. The wealth and privilege gap between those at the top and those at the bottom has grown into a horrific expanse of poverty and suffering. Despite the clear disparity, there is seemingly nothing to be done about the rampant corruption and most people in the middle have little comprehension for what is happening around them, too tired from the incessant rodok race. Beyond the issues of mortal society, an unseen society is having a similar split. Unknown by the world at large, there is a magic-wielding population known as the Enlightened that long ago escaped the physical world after nearly being hunted to extinction.

For centuries, the Enlightened ruled over those without the ability to tap into the world’s energy. Tired of their oppression and massively outnumbering the magic-users, the Mortals organized and hunted Enlightened in their most vulnerable times. Everything is fair in war when your opponent can kill you with a word.

Those that survived the massacre decided to go into hiding but with nowhere safe remaining, the most powerful among the Enlightened called on their Gods and begged for salvation. Taking pity on their loyal followers, the Gods did the unthinkable and sacrificed every drop of their divine power to fundamentally change how the world worked. Their actions ripped the world into two physical realms, separated by a place called the Between, a terrifying landscape that reflects the two worlds in a twisted fashion.

The Enlightened escaped into their hidden world, but great rifts had formed between the different races in the conflict with the mortals. Suspicion had grown when rumors spread of some Enlightened helping the mortals hunt those who were hiding. There was a great war hidden behind the shadow of the Between. The dead were innumerable on all sides. A tedious ceasefire was agreed upon and it was decided it would be best for the different races to segregate to stop more killing from occurring.

Stasis had finally spread through the surviving generations of Enlightened, though the distance between the races was vast as ever. Most attempts to reunite the Enlightened was met with deadly resistance. A new war waged in the shadows, the Mortals completely unaware of the madness from beyond.

In a final act of desperation, leaders from each race were chosen by their people to attend a Grand Council. None were allowed to leave until a solution was found. No weapons or magic would be allowed within the building to avoid rash decisions. The negotiations took far longer than many expected, but in the end, the Enlightened agreed to desegregate their people and formed a school that families could send their children to mingle with the other races and learn a standardized form of magic.

The results have been mixed…
